Situated within the Balkans, Montenegro is a beautiful and culturally fascinating part of south-eastern Europe. Montenegro has a population of over half a million, but has only around 250 evangelical Christians.
Despite being very different culturally, you as a student will identify with many of the things that Montenegrin students face. With many struggles going on nationally, most young people have little hope in the future and desire to leave the country.
Montenegro has Eastern Orthodox traditions and heritage, but most students either have nominal faith or are functionally atheist. We'll be aiming to bolster the local efforts on campus through sharing the hope we have in the Lord Jesus during their events week.
The Montenegrin CU movement (EUS) are faithful witnesses to the gospel, and through partnering with them, our trip, though short, will serve to catalyse their mission for the rest of the year. While our role is to support them, we believe you’ll experience tremendous personal growth in your own faith and broaden your vision for global mission. Whether you’re considering long-term overseas service or simply seeking a short-term mission experience, you’re warmly invited to join their team!
Would you prayerfully consider joining with this crucial mission? This year students from both the Wales and North West regions will join EUS for the first time for an Easter Mission! We’d love for you to apply.
We’re expecting that a group of us would travel to Cambridge 28 March before an early flight from Stanstead on the 29 March and returning on the 5 of April. The local EUS movement will meet us there and give us a lift back to Nikšić where the outreach will take place.
We'll be arriving, exploring, and orienting ourselves during the weekend. During the week we'll be helping to facilitate the mission week through extensive first contact in the form of a 'cultural corner' with the aim of inviting students along to an evangelistic evening event. On the Friday there will be an excursion planned to decompress and continue to build friendships with students we meet. We'll then be flying back on the Saturday.
Our hosts provisionally are forecasting the trip will cost under £400 total with costs in country expected to be around £270 and flights around £100 depending on time of booking. Staff Workers will be drawing alongside the students to help facilitate their fundraising efforts but students are responsible for ensuring they have the money in time for the trip.
Local church leaders/missionaries in Nikšić own a large house and are offering space for team members to have a single bed sharing in a large dorm space, single-sex across two or more rooms.
The main meal of the day will be provided, but team members are expected to pay for a meal out if, for example, getting lunch with a Montenegrin student. These costs should be covered within the £400 unless something extravagant is purchased. We're also hoping to have a meal as a team to debrief following the trip.
Those travelling on a British passport will not be required to apply for a visa for this trip. There are no vaccinations required for this trip but it is recommended that you are up to date with your routine vaccination courses and boosters. You may also wish to speak to your GP or pharmacist about additional vaccines such as Hep A.
