The Law Network elective is designed to give law graduates the opportunity to explore the implications of the Christian faith for the study and practice of law. The elective will help you develop a theology of law and justice that is deeply rooted in the Gospel, as well as to gain confidence in addressing common issues faced by Christian lawyers. For those considering a career in law after Relay, the elective will give you a firm foundation to build on as you seek to live and speak for Jesus in your workplace.
The elective study content is made up of a combination of books, articles and videos, which should take up half day or a full day (to be agreed) each week.
Each term, we’ll study one aspect of the God-given mandate we find in Micah 6.8: ‘What does the Lord require of you but to seek justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?’
What has God revealed about the nature and purpose of law and justice? In the first term, we’ll explore the character of God as Just, the revelation of his Law to mankind, and a biblical view of justice in the Old and New Testament.
How can I meaningfully proclaim the gospel as a lawyer? In term two, we’ll explore the theological basis and the legal freedoms around sharing the faith in the workplace, and how Christians can communicate good news for the public square.
What difference should it make in our everyday legal practice to be a disciple of Christ? In term three, we will dive into the topics of integrity, stress and mental health, time management and prayer.
Unlike core study, which is supervised by your Staff Worker, for the Law Network elective you’ll be supervised by the Law Network Coordinator. You’ll be part of monthly group supervisions via Zoom with other Relays taking the elective. Before each supervision you’ll be asked to work through the study materials for that month and prepare something, e.g. reflections on a topic, an argument for a debate, blog post.
In the spring term, we’ll spend a weekend away together with other students and young lawyers (SYL) from around the UK reflecting on a topic especially designed for Christian in law. You’ll be able to learn from experienced lawyers and connect with like-minded Christians who are keen to integrate their faith with the legal profession.
Alongside the elective study material, during your year on Relay there are many other opportunities to get stuck in with the Law Network as we seek to reach and equip law students.
These include engaging with the Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship, creating content for the website, attending the seminar track at Word Alive, helping to organise events, and participating in a mentoring program with experienced lawyers.
It’s important to us that you not only grow in your own knowledge and faith during your year as a Law Network Relay, but that you’re also able to use what you’ve gained to serve others. You will also work with your Staff Worker what some of the opportunities to support law students locally could be, and how you might build this into your Relay year.
To join with the Law Network elective, simply download a Relay application pack as normal and fill out the additional Relay Leadership Network application form.
